ATL HOOPFEST
MAY 4-5, 2019

The ATL Hoopfest was probably the most competitive of the NextGen circuit this far. I am becoming more familiar to some of the programs attending and it seems like the people of NextGen Hoops have been doing a good job matching up competitive teams and putting out really good product. This was one of the few tournaments where there were a lot more standout teams vs players. Coaches are doing a really good job finding the talent, but are even doing a better job coaching them.
The flow of the games appear getting much better as teams continue to play on the together, and the talent coming in gets better as well.

MATHURINE COACHES STANDOUTS

Corey Wade/ Hoop-Phi 2022, TN
One thing about playing for Coach Wade that I picked up on is you have to be tough, and he instilled that in all of his players. Not necessarily a physical toughness, but mentally tough. Go in with the mindset that you can defeat anyone and nothing will get in your way. Going up against a player like Jesus Rivas who is 6’7 and the tallest player on your team is about 6’1 6’2 that can defeat a team mentally before the game even starts. As he was preparing his unit for that championship match up against Jesus you can hear him saying, “attack attack attack, don't be scared of him go at him and get him fouled out”. |
He has a team of dogs willing to compete and they will not back down from anyone. When you watch his players Jaylein Sexton, Keilan Holloway, Latavious Conyers, and Xavier Fisher, there game alone will back it all up. MATHURINE

Alexander Garcia / Miami City Ballers 2022, FL
One of the coaches that I have witnessed a few times now and can confidently say all of his kids will be successful with or without basketball. He goes so hard for his players you want nothing but success for him and his team. He was the coach who packed up his 6 players and made the 8 hour drive just to get his players some more exposure and get their names out. Also Coach Garcia handles the team social media accounts and you can see how he spends time with his teams and open their minds to new things. He gets his kids out to explore the city and shows them all of the things in life that basketball can help them achieve. On the sidelines he makes it known he is there as well. |
He gives little room for error and he will get on to his team for the simplest mistakes. His voice travels waves and its even more eye opening that his players are bilingual so you can hear him getting on to them in Spanish. Imagine playing a team and you have no clue what sets he is calling or what he is throwing at you. Coach Garcia does a great job with his talent and has a strong passion for the game and his players. Its a reason that Miami City Ballers are always playing on Championship Sundays. MATHURINE

Eric Izquierdo/ Flame 2021, GA
Eric had to be the most composed coach in the building. His team was down 15 at one point, and not once did he look phased, lose his cool, or even seem to worry. In the timeouts Coach Eric would calmly talk to his players, tell them to pick up the intensity and continue to watch as if he know the tide would turn. Jalen Harris picked up a steal that lead to a break away dunk and the rest was history. A timeout was called after that play and the Flames ended up going on a run that would eventually have them win the game. Still Coach Izquierdo, was not phased as they picked up the win and he casually walked off the court. Post game I had to address him and let him know that, it was wild seeing you be so calm with your teams back against the wall, and he responded by pretty much saying, |
“I know my team, I know the dogs I have and I know the more the opposing team talks and gets hyped up it will only fuel my players more”. I liked hearing that because he let the kids make mistakes, he let the game go one and he trusted in his team to go to work vs making change after change and blaming the game on bad officiating and small things like that. Confidence, and poised would be the words I use to describe Coach Eric style which lead his team to a championship. MATHURINE
TEAM/PLAYER STANDOUTS
ABC ELITE 2021/Tri Cities High School, GA
Peyton Daniels 2021 is one of the best guards for his class in the state of GA, and it showed. Daniels has a clear superior IQ and a feel for the game beyond his years. He has insane ball control and can see the entire court while handling full court ball pressure. Daniels can flat out score from all three levels and has tremendous confidence in his ability. He holds an offer from UGA with plenty more high major offers to come! Daniels was a key piece on a state championship team this past season as a sophomore and will look to lead his team to a possibly 3-peat over the next few years. |
Mario McIntosh 2021 is one of the most versatile players in the class of 2021. There is nothing he cannot do on the floor and offensively his game has no weaknesses. He can finish inside, knock down the mid range, and even step out and hit the deep ball. McIntosh is a matchup nightmare and was impossible to contain all weekend. His position at the next level has yet to be determined but with his motor and his versatility he is for sure to be a mid to high major prospect over the next two years.
Davorian Rudolph 2021 is a raw athlete that can certain get up off the floor. Whether it’s finishing an alley oop or taking it to the rim himself, Rudolph loves to play above the rim. He also has great timing using his athleticism to block shots at the rim. Rudolph has high major wing upside especially if he continues to improve his ball handling, court awareness, and his perimeter shooting.
Davon Cottle 2021 is a big guard that can score in a variety of ways. His size and strength allow him to finish at the basket in traffic, but he is also quick and shifty enough to create space and score from the perimeter. Cottle is an all around guard that can impact the game with both his offense and defense. He sees the floor well and is more than capable of creating and facilitating. Next Level Scouting

Gianfranco Grafals 2019 North Florida Suns
Grafals is a senior from Jacksonville, FL who has apparently flown completely under the radar of all college coaches but that may have come to an end this past weekend. With an array of highlight dunks and several 20 point games, Grafals has definitely caught our attention and his stock has risen tremendously. He was hands down the most impressive player in the entire tournament. Grafals has great size for the guard position and at 6’3 185 lbs already possesses a college ready frame. Atlanta Playmakers, GA
Josiah Agnew 2019 is a polished combo guard with plenty of poise. The Lander University commit can get it done on both ends. He can see the floor very well and can run the offense from the point guard position. Agnew has a smooth jump shot and an ability to score that makes him effective both on and off the ball. Lander University secured a big time sleeper in Josiah Agnew who will be a very solid asset possibly immediately as a freshman. Myles Davis 2019 is a big guard that can get to the rim whenever he wants. His size and strength allows him to finish at the basket through contact and draw a lot of fouls in the process. Davis can also shoot the ball from deep making him a deadly offensive threat. He is one of the better available prospects that college coaches should definitely take a chance on. Next Level Scouting |
Augustin Kingombe 2021
North Florida Suns Kingombe is an extremely versatile all around guard that can do just about everything on the floor. He can score, pass, rebound, and defend. Although he is just a sophomore, Kingombe stood out amongst juniors and seniors as one of the best players in the tournament. He has great size and strength and already has the build of a senior in high school. Augustin Kingombe is certainly a name to remember as he has tremendous upside and and will be a problem at the next level. Next Level Scouting |
Demarcus Eiland 2019
Goon Fam Elite, LA Demarcus Eiland is a big guard who can score both inside and out. He is a matchup nightmare finishing easily on smaller defenders and isolating bigger defenders to get a bucket. Eiland is a pure scorer and shot the ball extremely well from outside all weekend. He also can create off the dribble and set up his teammates for easy buckets. Eiland is a college ready prospect who is capable of contributing right away. |
Tra’Vion Jackson/ Manchester High School/ West Ga Bucks/ 2022
Tra’Vion was physically a beast amongst the other kids in the 2022 class. You can tell he spends a great deal in the weight room working on his frame and using that to his advantage against other players in the long haul. His execution of the step back and a few spin moves showed off his footwork and how he pays attention to detail. He was very aggressive in getting to the basket and liked to crash the boards as well. Tra’Vion also did a good job of fighting into traffic and getting multiple opportunities at the line. Gets very high on his jump shots and has some good bounce to him in general. He can get after defensively picking up a few chase down blocks along with sliding his feet well and staying in front of his defender. Improvements: Still young a developing, I would just advise Jackson to continue working on his pace and level of speed he plays with and slow the game down a bit. |
He will do a lot of damage attacking and beating his man to the basket, but his pace and change of speed will make it easier to knock down pull up jumpers and floaters. He can also improve on his shooting overall, getting comfortable scoring on all 3 levels since the competition will only get better for him from here on out.

Kristian Hill South Gwinnett High School/ Flame/ 2021
Kristian was a ball dominant guard who can penetrate your defense at any moment. Confident in his ball handling skills Kristian keeps the ball on a rope and does a good job with limiting his turnovers. He has an attack mindset and that helped him earn some oous and awws while setting up his teammates for the easy basket. His motor should and pg skills will have him playing a significant role for South Gwinnett next year.
Improvement: Multiple times when Kristian would get really aggressive and attack the basket you can hear his coach say, ” That’s the Kristian I know”. Clearly he has two gears, one where he is a facilitator and is just trying to make the right play, while the other is an attacking guard who is not afraid to get physical. If he finds a way to mesh the two styles, and play carefree basketball he will be in for a bright future.

Iajah Phillips/ Mill Creek High School/ Flame 2021
Easily the MVP of the day, I am putting a star by Iajah Phillips name. There is just certain things in basketball that are not common or just a routine play, and Iajah again had a unique skill set. He had the intangibles and signs that showed this kid is around some people who really know the game. His fluidity and ability to drive to the basket told me he had some overseas roots to him and he confirmed he was part Jamaican. The way he finished around the rim and in tight corners were elite and this kid is only a soph. He can shoot the 3 ball and does a great job setting his teammates up. He was good at penetrating but overall he was a pure scorer. This Mill Creek team is looking very dangerous, there has been a standout from that school in almost every tournament I have covered this year so far.
Improvements: Although he was a pure scorer and showed flashes of an elite player, he turned the ball over a lot and was very flustered in double teams and full court defenses. When I say double team, of course I don’t expect him to slice and dice up two people but it was like the minute he felt the heat, in a way he would freeze. Strengths: Ball Handling, Scoring Ability, IQ Improvements: Pressure Defense, Shooting, Strength MATHURINE

JaRon Ford/ Berkmar High School/ Flames 2021
JaRon was easily one of the more mature guards in the gym and had a mature game as well to go along with his personality. You have to keep an eye on JaRon, he is quiet but sneaky and quick. He liked to get his teammates going early and set the tone then he would go in for the kill. He did a great job of attacking the basket and slashing to the goal. His first step was a blur. No excess dribbles, he would hit a sold 1-2 and catch you on your back foot. He also did a good job of getting to the spots and getting his floater off showing he has that soft mid-range touch. He is also sneaky on the defensive end, he has football in his background as well so he did a good job getting low coming away with a lot of steals, and throwing his opposition of guard with his quick hands. Stated earlier that this Berkmar team had some young pieces in Julius Reynolds and Dara Olande who both are sophmores as well. Throw JaRon Ford in that mix and you have a serious core for the future.
Improvements: While JaRon has a very smooth game and he gets in your face and makes it known, he has room to grow especially in communication. He wants his teammates to score and get looks as well but he can do so being vocal and helping space out the floor as well. A couple of possessions were Georgia Flame was flustered and turned the ball over, spacing was and issue, JaRon knew that and yelled it to his coach as opposed to his teammates and making them aware of the situation. His confidence is growing so once he realizes he is the leader, his game can increase dramatically. MATHURINE

Makai Vassell/ Mill Creek High School/ Flame 2021
It was really hard to label Vassell position because he showed true signs of a hybrid. Comfortable in the low post, Vassell can still break his opponent down and has solid ball handling skills. Vassell is a big that likes to play above the rim and he has some sneaky strength to him. Another player with deceptive speed, that helped when he made hard cuts to the basket, or when he decided to put the ball on the ground a become a slasher. as well. He ran the pick n roll well and that helped show off more of his slashing ability. He has a solid low post foundation and made some plays with his back to the basket, but overall he is just your traditional athlete. A strong rebounder, Vassell does a good job of using his size to his advantage. His strong legs made it easy for him to box out and big up a few big dunks as well.
Improvements: Vassell is still getting comfortable and figuring out his game. He is a jack of all trades but a master of none. I would challenge him to continue working in the low post and also develop that mid range game. Vassell has a lot of potential, so for him its just about polishing his game and staying in the gym.

Double Trouble 2023, Georgia
Every tournament I attend, I try to highlight a program or a coach who along with the players were difference makers in the game. In this case that went to the head coach for DT program, Charles Pack. It’s fun seeing someone around the same age as you with so much passion and fire doing the exact thing he loves. Whether this is a project and a way to develop his coaching skills for the future, Charles definitely checks all of the boxes and has some great basketball minds around him. Pregame he went over a few of the basics, lock in, rebounding, and play hard, but as soon as the opening tip got underway all of that went out of the window for DT. |
Good coaches usually let the game play out a bit and if they find themselves on he opposite end of say a 10-0 run they will call a timeout, make some coaching adjustments bring out a press and regain the lead. The elite coaches though usually call a timeout within the first two possessions of bad play and that’s exactly what Coach Pack did. He knew what every player on his team was capable of, and based on how they were playing he knew he had to stick it to them early. His coaching and breakdown was so legit, he had me ready to lace up and step on the court. He emphasized on taking the moment serious, there in a championship game and players are laughing and jogging. He hit on all of those points and you can see the dramatic turn around. so much so he ended up having a running clock (20 point margin) in the championship game. It’s amazing what can happen when players and coaches are on the same page and locked in from the beginning. MATHURINE

ABC Elite 2021, Georgia
ABC Elite is for the most part the underclassmen from the defending AAAAAA champions from Tri-Cities H.S in Georgia. There’s no accident why this team is poised for another state title run due to the chemistry that they displayed. ABC Elite is a well coached group year round and have plenty of players with high major potential on the roster. ABC Elite opened the tournament with an impressive victory against a tough XXI Premier team 75-67. The game was competitive throughout, but ABC Elite made more key plays down the stretch to hold on to win. The next game was another win versus B-BALL which set up a very much anticipated semifinal match up against Buchanan Mentality! This was another exciting and competitive game that ABC also |
came out victorious. The championship; however, didn’t go as smooth. ABC was outmatched by the Flame in a defensive struggle and came up short in the championship game 44-39. Next Level Scouting Report
Davorian Rudolph/ Tri-Cities High School/ ABC Elite 2021
I really liked the upside of Davorian and the mindset he plays with. He wants to beat you in every way possible and his makes the other team very aware of that. He wants to do everything to help his team win, he does not want to be subbed out, and he really feel a certain way not being on the court contributing. He does a good job playing above the rim and at 6’7 his long arms help him pick up so blocks whether it be in the low post or on the wings. He showed some confidence in his mid range j, he can shoot the 3 and can run the floor really well. Davorian will look to contribute to a really good Tri-Cities program who is coming off a state championship run and brings back pieces like Peyton Daniels, and Demetrius Rives. Pair in Rudolph with a few other ABC members and a repeat doesn’t seem to far fetched.
Improvements: The mindset of Rudolph can be very beneficial but there were a few moments where his emotions got the best of him. For me being a spectator I love the passion and fire and I understand it all, but coaches might not interpret it the same way. Davorian has to do a better job of body language, and controlling his emotions. He can utilize his size more as well, offensively you can see him standing around the 3 point line or waiting for the ball to make a play vs attacking, crashing the rebound and continuing to be aggressive. Also Davorian can add to his frame a bit to make him more stronger and dominant on the low post. Again he is already about 6’6 6’7 so he has to be able to use that size to his advantage against smaller wings.

Jaylein Sexton/ Red Bank High School/ Hoop-Phi 2022
Jaylein had a very high motor and a dog in him that separates him from his peers. He was willing to do anything to make a play that would help his team and pick up a win. He was able to come into a semifinals game with the mindset to take over in which he did scoring 28 points leading his team to the championship game. He did a really good job finishing around the rim showing off a little bit of bounce as a two foot leaper and capable of finishing with both hands, really making his presence felt from the free throw line in. Funny Sexton is his last name because that’s the type of energy he had, a Collin Sexton get in your face, clapping his hands on defense and having the game to back it up. He has good court awareness knowing his spacing and consistently moving without the ball. He hustled to get back on defense and would crash the boards on every play even following up his shot. Defensively he did a good job sliding his feet and staying in front of defenders as well. He sets himself up for easy scores and should be headed for a bright future himself.
Improvements: Still feeling the game out and maturing, at times Jaylein could find himself forcing a play which can lead to easy turnovers and easy points for the other team. At times he would also dribble to much, I counted on a few possessions were anytime he took more than about 6 dribbles he would turn the ball over or drive and force a kick out with no recipient. Holloway was the shifty pg along with Jaylein who lead Hoop Phi to a championship this weekend. Once Holloway took over full time pg duties you can see his team tap into another gear. With Holloway’s speed and quick decision making his team had no choice but to keep up. He was very fluid in his dribbles and with the slightest opening he will drive to the basket and find one of his 2 post players for the easy lay. He would wear out his defenders and have them running in circles trying to guard him. Improvements: As a younger guard still getting his feel, and building confidence, Keilan can do a better job of putting himself in scoring position. He can get to the basket with ease but he likes to rack up on the assist and that can find him passing up on scoring opportunities. Teams over the summer will start to pick up on Hoop Phi and what they have to offer, so Keilan can find himself at any moment being relied on as a primary scorer.

Christian Willis 2022 Go Harder U
Christian Willis is an elite all around point guard that can do everything on the floor. He can affect the game in a variety of ways whether it is rebounding, scoring, defending, or facilitating. Willis scores with ease both off the catch and off the dribble. He is super quick with a shifty handle that allows him to get whatever shot he wants on the court. Willis has a great feel for the game to go along with elite court vision. He is a very willing defender that plays extremely physical. Willis has a chance to make a varsity impact right away and could ultimately be an elite two way PG at the next level. Next Level Scouting Report Watch Full Game |
North Florida Suns -Varsity Boys, Jacksonville, FL
The North Florida Suns are one of the most complete teams we’ve seen so far this summer. The Suns are extremely deep and receive contribution from both their starters and reserves. They play an uptempo style and share the ball without caring who scores each play. The North Florida Suns opened the ATL Hoopfest with a convincing 53-28 victory against T Smith Elite (TN). They jumped out to an early 40-10 lead and quickly let everyone know they were going to be the team to beat. In the next game, the Suns surprisingly handled a solid Atlanta Playmakers team 65-48 in a game that oddly wasn’t as competitive as we thought it would be. In the semifinals, the North Florida Suns faced their toughest test yet against the NC Cavs. |
The game had several lead changes and came down to the final possessions with the Suns edging out the Cavs 66-63. This set up a showdown with Goon Fam Elite who had looked quite unbeatable to this point. Goon Fam Elite -Varsity Boys Shreveport, LA
Goon Fam Elite was one of the most exciting teams we have seen all summer. They play together and with a love for the game that you don’t see very often. Flashy passes, deep step back threes, alley oop dunks … Goon Fam Elite definitely brought the show to Atlanta! Goon Fam Elite opened the ATL Hoopfest with a laugher against Gwinnett Xpress cruising to a 71-39 victory. They made it look extremely easy often toying with the opposition before eventually scoring. The next game was similar as Goon Fam Elite dominated the Atlanta Playmakers Black 75-36. They went on to win two more games to improve to 4-0 before setting up an undefeated showdown with the North Florida Suns. Both teams had been very impressive to this point and the championship game did not disappoint. |
Goon Fam Elite had several opportunities to win the game but couldn’t make enough plays down the stretch as they fell short to the North Florida Suns 60-53. This is an exciting team with several players who have a chance to excel at the next level. Next Level Scouting Report
Goon Fam Elite Major respect to the Goon Fam Elite Varsity program. AAU is very competitive, playing 3 games over the course of two days, playing two games in one day, and if you advance to Sunday that’s another 2 games potentially in one day. Goon Fam Elite was able to advance to the championship game and they only had 6 players on the weekend. Although the fatigue kicked in and they relied heavily on the 3 ball in the championship game, you can see why they were able to fight there way into the matchup. MATHURINE AGENCY
Jesus Rivas 2022 Miami City Ballers
Jesus Rivas had a monster weekend in Atlanta at the ATL Hoopfest. Rivas continues to impress showing flashes of greatness throughout the weekend. The 6’6 forward continues to improve each tournament and has more upside than any other player we’ve seen. He’s a raw talent with exceptional timing and touch around the rim. Rivas impacts the game tremendously on both ends and has the potential to be a high major prospect. Rivas put the team on his back and carried his team to the championship game where they fell short by 1 point to Hoop Phi. Rivas posted a triple-double the 12 points 20 rebounds and 13 blocks in the championship game. Next Level Scouting |
